An anagram is a word or phrase you get when you rearrange letters of a word or phrase. To get a perfect anagram, you must use all the original letters of a word or phrase exactly once; for example, the word anagram can be rearranged into nag-a-ram. Someone who creates anagrams may be called an “anagrammatist”. The original word or phrase is known as the subject of the anagram.
Anagrams are in themselves a recreational activity. Sources suggest that Pythagoras, in the 6th century BC, used anagrams to discover deep philosophical meanings. Galileo, Huygens and Robert Hooke, often recorded their results in anagram form to stake their claim on a discovery and prevent anyone else claiming the credit.
Back in the 17th century, Scientists, or natural philosophers as they were then called also used anagrams. They would often write down a discovery in the form of jumbled letters to notify colleagues about their achievement before they were ready to reveal it to the world at large.
